Week 17 – The Ch’i-lin Purse
1) wealthy: rich; large amount of money, property, or valuable things
2) altar: a table or place which serves as a center of worship or ritual
3) widow: a woman whose husband or wife has died and who has not married again
4) intelligent: smart; able to learn and understand things easily
5) spoiled: to allow someone to do or have everything that it wants to, usually so that it expects to get everything it wants and does not show respect to other people
6) exchange: to take something back to a shop where it was bought and get something else instead
7) offspring: a person’s child(ren)
8) matchmaker: a person who tries to arrange marriages or romantic relationships between people
9) engaged: having formally agreed to marry
10) dowry: an amount of money or property that a woman’s parents give to the man she marries
11) satin: a smooth fabric that is shiny on one side and dull on the other
12) embroider: to decorate cloth or clothing with patterns or pictures with needlework
13) legendary: from a legend
14) talented: having a special often athletic, creative, or artistic natural ability
15) satisfied: happy with what one has or with the way things are; content
16) mistress: a woman in charge of something
17) sedan chair: a portable and often covered seat for one person with horizontal poles on either side, designed to be lifted and carried by two people 
18) pavilion: a structure with open sides used for shelter or entertainment, usually found in a garden or park
19) footmen: a servant who serves at table, tends the door of a house or carriage, and runs errands
20) ration: a limited amount of something that one person is allowed to have, especially when there is not much of it available
21) distraught: extremely worried, nervous, or upset
22) exhausted: extremely tired
23) butler: the most important male servant in a house, usually responsible for organizing other servants
24) impress: to cause someone to feel admiration or respect
25) dismiss: to remove from a job; fire
26) seldom: not often; rarely
27) governess: a woman who lives with a family and cares for and teaches their children at home
28) grudgingly: unwillingly, reluctantly
29) honor: being highly regarded, admired, or respected by others
30) pawn: to leave an item with a lender of money to get a loan. In order to get the item back, the loan must be paid back
